ARS 32: The U-Shaped Building at Caesarea Maritima

Archaeological Reports Series 32: The U-Shaped Building at Caesarea Maritima

The U-Shaped Building at Caesarea Maritima: A Garden Attached to the泭Praetorium

by Jane DeRose Evans and Jennifer Tobin

The U-Shaped Building at Caesarea is an exploration of a portion of the praetorium of the governor of Caesarea and its subsequent phases, through its excavation in the 1970s by a team led by Robert J. Bull. By examining field notes, photographs and plans, a team of specialists reconstructs the original fourth-century CE construction of a garden space and fountain; its subsequent remodeling in the mid-fifth to mid-sixth century; and its second phase as a luxuriously decorated garden and entertainment space. Partially refurbished during the short Persian occupation, the reassertion of Byzantine control led to a transformation of the area, linking it more strongly to interior spaces of the praetorium. Subsequent phases elucidate the areas use as a cemetery in the Crusader and Ottoman periods by providing information about the inhabitants and their burial practices. The volume investigates the form of a praetorium in the eastern Mediterranean, the formation of ancient garden architecture, and the composition of the inhabitants of Crusader and Ottoman Caesarea.泭

Excavation Scholarships

Excavation scholarships help individuals join excavations and archaeological projects across the Middle East and wider Mediterranean, covering costs like travel and participation fees for volunteers and staff. Awards are typically a set amount per recipient, with some designated for specific excavations, regions, or groups.

Stevan B. Dana Scholarships support participation in excavations at the site of Hazor and other excavations in Israel. Six scholarships are designated individuals to participate in excavations at Hazor; the remaining scholarships are designated for other digs in Israel.泭

Established in 2013 through generous gifts made by the family and friends of P. E. MacAllister, scholarship funds have been designated to support the participation of 17勛圖members as volunteers or staff on excavation projects. MacAllister became part of the 17勛圖family in the early 1970s, and he served as Board Chair from 1994 through 2013.

Established in 2014 through generous gifts made by the students and friends of Eric and Carol Meyers, scholarship funds have been designated to support the participation of 17勛圖members as volunteers or staff on excavation projects. Eric and Carol joined the Duke faculty in 1969 and 1977 respectively. Both have taught and mentored several generations of archaeologists and biblical historians, and both have received the highest accolades for their academic work.

Through generous gifts made by Professors Carol and Eric Meyers, scholarship funds have been designated to support the participation of 17勛圖members as volunteers or staff on excavation projects. One-half of the funds awarded each year are in memory of Eric s mother, Shirlee Meyers. The other half of the funds are in memory of G. Ernest Wright, former 17勛圖President and a professor of both Eric and Carol Meyers.

Through a generous gift of the late Mrs. Katherine Barton Platt, scholarship funds have been designated to support the participation of 17勛圖members as volunteers or staff on excavation projects.泭

Established in 2014 by the Sheeler family, scholarship funds have been designated to support the participation of 17勛圖members as volunteers or staff on the泭. Harva L. Sheeler (19342013) was a long-time friend and supporter of ASOR. The Sheeler Scholarship celebrates Harvas life and is funded by annual contributions from her family.

The Strange and Midkiff Families Endowed Scholarship Funds have been designated to support the participation of 17勛圖members as volunteers or staff on excavation projects. Jim and Carolyn Strange were members of 17勛圖for more than 50 years, and all of their children have been active in ASOR. A son, a daughter, and a son-in-law are now professional archaeologists. Jim directed an important excavation for the University of South Florida at Sepphoris for several decades, and Carolyn also played an integral role in that project.

Established in 2019 through annual gifts from Charles Steinmetz, these scholarships support the participation of U.S. military personnel or veterans in archaeological excavations.泭

插釦倏賊s Member-Supported Scholarships are funded by contributions from our members. Many of these gifts are made during泭March Fellowship Madness, and other members make contributions (ranging from $10 to $2,000) throughout the year. Whenever the gifts are made, 17勛圖segregates these donations into a special fund reserved for scholarships for fieldwork that support our student and early-career members.

Project Grants

Project grants support directors of ASOR-affiliated archaeological projects across the Mediterranean, funding excavation, site documentation, preservation, and community engagement work. Awards range from a few thousand dollars up to $10,000, with some designated for specific countries or urgent, time-sensitive site situations.

Shepard Urgent Action Grants are intended for emergency documentation, stabilization or excavation at an archaeological site in the greater Mediterranean region. Grant amounts range from $2,500-$10,000.

Lawrence T. Geraty Community Archaeology Grants are designed to support projects that will incentivize local engagement with protection, preservation, and presentation of archaeological sites in Jordan, starting with Madaba Plains Project sites.

The Denise L. Gold Fund was created to support ASOR-affiliated archaeological projects. Gold has been a member of the 17勛圖family for more than three decades, and she has participated in numerous excavation projects in Israel, including Megiddo and Lachish.

The泭Stevan B. Dana Project Fund泭provides modest annual grants to worthy field projects that are泭ASOR-affiliated, particularly to newer and smaller projects, to help them get started, and to discrete components of larger projects that can be completed with an award. Funds may be use to purchase a piece of equipment or to pay for a discrete smaller initiative. The grant also may provide support for off-season research and/or analysis.

The泭Stevan B. Dana Fund for Projects in Israel泭provides modest annual grants to worthy field projects in Israel that are泭ASOR-affiliated, particularly to newer and smaller projects, to help them get started, and to discrete components of larger projects that can be completed with an award. Funds may be use to purchase a piece of equipment or to pay for a discrete smaller initiative. The grant also may provide support for off-season research and/or analysis.泭

The Harris Endowment provides modest grants to worthy projects that are ASOR-affiliated, particularly to newer and smaller projects, to help them get started, and to discrete components of larger projects that can be completed with an award.

The泭Seger Endowment泭provides modest grants to worthy field projects that are泭ASOR-affiliated, particularly to newer and smaller projects, to help them get started, and to discrete components of larger projects that can be completed with an award. The endowment funds are intended both to support a particular need for an archaeological project and to help the PI and the project secure matching funds.

Research Fellowships

Research fellowships support members’ scholarly work outside of active excavation, funding activities like studying museum and archival collections, and research on specialist topics. Awards vary in size and focus, with some open to graduate and postdoctoral students, and funds can typically cover travel, per diem, and other direct research expenses.

The Study of Collections Fellowships are intended to support the study of collections by our members. The collections include museum and archival collections, repositories, or collections of national authorities. The fellowship funds may be used to support travel, per diem expenses, and other direct expenses.

The Mason Fellowship is泭awarded biennially to a scholar/poet/writer/artist whose project proposal comes closest in scope to Herbert Masons oeuvre. The project manuscript must be transmitted into English. The monetary award may be used to support travel expenditures to special collections, acquire access to rare or hard to find research materials, art illustrations of a proposal or to further scholarly studies.

The Mesopotamian Fellowships are primarily intended to support field/research on ancient Mesopotamian culture carried out in the Middle East, but other projects such as travel to work on museum collections or archives related to ancient Mesopotamia will also be considered. Projects with a focused component on the involvement and acknowledgement of local public/scholars are particularly welcome.

Made possible by a generous donor and the Dar Ben Gacem historic guest houses in Tunis, Tunisia, this research fellowship provides room and half board (breakfast and dinner) for up to four weeks at one of the two Dar Ben Gacem guest houses in the Medina of Tunis. Research topics can include history, archaeology, cultural heritage (both tangible and intangible), religion, ethnography, and museum collection(s).

Annual Meeting Scholarships

Annual Meeting scholarships help offset the cost of attending the yearly conference. Support includes discounted or waived registration for members facing financial hardship, small travel grants for students at 17勛圖institutional-member schools, and funded travel for scholars from specific regions.

Due to COVID-19, and thanks to 插釦倏賊s generous members, current 17勛圖members with a need may request a 25%, 50%, or full scholarship for annual meeting registration. We will strive to meet all requests from members, with a preference towards those who have not received a scholarship in the past two years.泭

17勛圖is once again pleased to announce up to ten travel scholarships of $250 for students enrolled at an institution that is an institutional member of 17勛圖(see list of泭Institutional Members). Funding for these scholarships comes from the institutional membership fees.

17勛圖is pleased to announce the creation of a travel grant program to support Annual Meeting participation for scholars from Iraq and its Kurdistan Region. The Tigris Travel Grants, made possible through the generosity of Kiersten Neumann, cover the cost of flights to the Annual Meeting as well as accommodation in the泭17勛圖hotel. 17勛圖will also assist successful candidates with obtaining the relevant visas and permissions for travel.

Membership Scholarships

As part of 插釦倏賊s ongoing efforts to support our members, we are pleased to announce membership scholarships that are available for any current or lapsed 17勛圖member. Thanks to several anonymous donors, we have received pledges to pay the membership fee for those who have experienced a financial hardship related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The site of K羹ltepe served as a major hub within the Assyrian trade network during the early second millennium BCE. Its expanding commercial activities, socio-economic diversity, and cosmopolitan population necessitated a structured process of urbanization. Although excavations since 1948 have revealed extensive data, the Lower Town Level II has not been evaluated holistically in terms of its settlement organization and urban layout. This study presents the first integrated reconstruction of this levels spatial pattern, drawing on planimetric data and the distribution of architectural remains. The findings demonstrate a dual urban fabric, comprising an organically developed zone around the mound and a more formally organized network in the eastern sector, characterized by coordinated streets, intersections, squares, and infrastructure. This analysis provides new insight into early urbanization processes in Central Anatolia and clarifies K羹ltepes position within broader discussions of ancient urbanism.

This article looks at a handful of Late Cypriot III Normal Face figurines that display Egyptianizing features in both posture and hairstyle. After discussing how these figurines are unique in the Cypriot corpus, it shows how the features under consideration can only come from Egyptian precedent. It ends with a discussion of how an understanding of the Egyptian prototype (especially the hairstyle) can offer new insights into the interpretation of Cypriot female figurines.

This article discusses ten stamped Rhodian amphora handles recovered from the Hellenistic layers of Tal覺gecit Mound in the northern Levant corridor. The stamps date from about 209205 BCE (Euphranor) to about 169/167140/138 BCE (Kallio), documenting five eponyms and five fabricants. Notably, one amphora features a previously unrecorded connection between the eponym Aristodamos II and the fabricant Nikasion, expanding the known activity range of the latter. Two additional stamps, belonging to Theuphanes II and Aristomachos I, are also published here for the first time. Along with Seleucid coins, these stamps form the main epigraphic evidence for the Hellenistic occupation of the mound. At the same time, associated ceramic groups reveal the sites material engagement with broader Hellenistic cultural practices. Despite the limited assemblage, it adds new, securely dated material to the broader collection of Rhodian amphora stamps. It also offers valuable data for understanding the inland distribution of Rhodian transport amphorae in South Anatolia and North Syria.

The findings of archaeological excavations carried out within the scope of the conservation and restoration works initiated by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) at the Boukoleon Palace in 2021 led to the publication of this article. The historical and spatial evolution of the Boukoleon Palace, located on the coast of the Sea of Marmara, and the Marmara Seawall in this region are the focus. Archaeological data will be discussed in light of historical texts, with particular attention to how the palace and the seawall changed over time.

Khirbet Ras Al-Tin is located in the West Bank, 10 km southwest of Nablus. During a rescue excavation prompted by construction plans and conducted by the Palestinian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, a burial chamber was discovered. Subsequent analyses of a human skull and rib fragments from the tomb, including Accelerator Mass Spectrometry radiocarbon dating and stable isotope analysis, were performed at the HEKAL Laboratory in Hungary. The individual was determined to be an 1823-year-old male from the local population exhibiting a metopic suture, and the remains were dated between ca. 430 and 600 CE. Moreover, facial reconstruction techniques were employed, providing a rare visual insight into the physical appearance of people living in the Palestinian highlands from the sixth century CE. Isotope analysis suggests a diet rich in legumes and vegetables, possibly supplemented by meat, consistent with that of wealthy populations or specific religious communities in the region.
